Swimming Through Clouds by Rajdeep Paulus31

I live in the in between. Between what if and what is. It’s how I manage. It’s the only way I know. Everyone has their way. This is mine.

When high school, cell phone disruption forces a classroom ban, the words on a Post-it note spark a sticky romance between two unlikely friends. Transfer student Talia Vanderbilt has one goal at her new school: to blend in with the walls. Lagan Desai, basketball captain and mathlete, would do just about anything to befriend the new girl. One Post-it note at a time, Lagan persuades Talia to peel back her heart, revealing her treasure chest of pain—an absent mother, a bedridden brother, and an abusive father. In a world where hurt is inevitable, the two teens search for a safe place to weather the storms of life. Together.

Rajdeep decided to be a writer during her junior year in high school after her English teacher gave her an “F” but told her she had potential. She studied English Literature at Northwestern University, and she writes masala-marinated, Young Adult Fiction, blogging weekly at InSearchofWaterfalls dot com.

Fun Facts about Swimming Through Clouds:33

Rajdeep here: On Biking…

I love riding my bike like Lagan loves biking. In fact, when my hubby and I first moved to Dominica, we didn’t own a car for the first two years of our marriage. But we had bikes, and rode all around the island, exploring coves, beaches, and waterfalls. Of course!

And when we’d be on a steep uphill, just when my legs would give way, my Sunshine would pedal right next to me, give me a push, and help me make it over the hump. Had a dejavu moment of those years when we did the Five Borough Bike Tour in New York City. Our final bridge to ride across was the ever long Verrazano, and Sun’s pushes helped me sail to the finish line in Staten Island!

All those memories are wonderful but the one I hold dearest is the time Sun biked to Lake Michigan [I took a bus,] and we met to have the dreaded “share your pasts” conversation. I remember I wore a black dress, symbolic of the funeral of our relationship I anticipated. Instead, the man I met by the water shared words that told me otherwise.

“My life is an open book to you,” he said. “As yours is to me. Not that I have to know every detail, but knowing you’ll tell me if I ask is good enough. Let’s move forward and leave the past behind us.” Or something like that. Just know I cried an ocean, so amazed that this twenty-one year old would embrace me with so much love and acceptance.

Fifteen years later, we now love to bike with our four girls. The youngest still has her training wheels. Something tells me I’m gonna cry when she rides free. The beginning and end of another milestone as a family lies around the corner!
